Tourniquet Application to Arm (AMM 719) National Museum of Health and Medicine First aid. Application of tourniquet to arm. A tourniquet is used to stop the flow of blood to a wound in order to prevent a patient from experiencing severe blood loss. The image above shows a tourniquet being made out of items that military personnel would have with them. Cloth and a blade. The cloth would be placed on the injured arm or leg and the knife or any other strong item would be used to twist the cloth to cut off the blood flow through the vein or artery.
